Top Gun Beer: Second Self Margarita in Gose returns

Second Self Margarita in Gose cans

We honestly aren’t sure what we drink more of around the Beer Street Journal office – beer or margaritas. This release makes choosing between the two a little bit easier. Second Self Margarita in Gose is back for a second season.

Let’s address the most badass fact about this beer, the Top Gun theme. Second Self now has a “Top Gun Series” of beers, that started with Maverick & Gose last year. That beer is back in the skies (shelves) once again with an updated recipe. Since you can’t pull off an inverted flying maneuver without a partner, Second Self Margarita in Gose, aka “MIG” is here.

MIG mimics the taste of a margarita thanks to fresh orange lime juice and Florida orange peel. Those flavors, plus a touch of salt makes this gose margarita/ beer hybrid. Shots of tequila might make the perfect compliment. The choice is yours.

Second Self Margarita in Gose is available in Georgia and Alabama again in March 2018.

Style: Gose (w/ Lime. Orange Peel. Coriander, Sea Salt.)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft.
Debut: 6/1/17
Latest Return: March 2018

4.3% ABV

New Belgium Tartastic Raspberry Lime Ale expands “Tart” series

New Belgium Tartastic Raspberry Lime Ale

New Belgium Tartastic Raspberry Lime Ale leads off a new kettle soured series of ales in 2018.

Some of this beer name should already be familiar to you – “Tartastic”. A year ago, New Belgium debuted Tartastic Lemon Ginger Sour. The brewery found success with this release among their fanbase, prompting the brewery to turn Tartastic into a full-on series. New Belgium Tartastic Raspberry Lime Ale takes the lead in the series this year, brewed with raspberry and lime purees.

Don’t let the beautiful color fool you, this beer isn’t heavy on the fruit. Each sip has a touch of tartness up front, that gives way to malty finish with just a drizzle of fresh raspberry. Intentionally restrained, Raspberry Lime Ale is better described as possessing “the essence” of the berries and citrus, instead of a face plant directly into a sweet pie.

Expect more “Tartastic” fruit-based releases in 2018.

New Belgium Tartastic Raspberry Lime Ale is a 12-ounce bottle and draft seasonal release.

Style: Kettle Sour Ale (w/ Raspberries. Lime Puree.)
Hops: Nugget
Malts: Pale, White Wheat

Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft.
Debut: February 2018

4.2% ABV

Texas brewery creates a Ramen Noodle infused ‘Cup O Beer’

Collective Brewing Project Cup O Beer

We’ve all been there. You’re down to your last dollar and you’re hungry. Then you see the price tag on the Cup O’ Noodles and all of a sudden you’re back to baller status. Last time we checked you can buy about 40 of them for a dollar.

Cup O’ Noodles, known by college students (and beer writers) the world over, is now officially in a beer thanks to Fort Worth, Texas based The Collective Brewing Project.

RELATED: Rogue brews stout with Sriracha Hot Sauce

The base beer is a tart/sour gose brewed with ginger, lime, lemongrass, and seaweed-cured sea salt. Let’s not forget the star of the show – 55 pounds of Ramen Noodles. (Which probably set the brewery back around $7.50.)

Collective Brewing Project Cup O’ Beer debuted in June, but the beer is still showing up at bars and events around Texas.

Style: Gose (w/ Lemongrass. Ginger. Lime. Sea Salt. Ramen Noodles.)
Availability: 500ml Bottles

Terrrapin Himalayan Pink Sea Salt Lime Gose will be Side Project #31

Terrrapin Himalayan Pink Sea Salt Lime Gose

Terrapin Himalayan Pink Sea Salt Lime Gose is on deck in Athens, Georgia.

The brewery already has a winner in the gose style – Watermelon Gose. The beer tastes like summer feels. Joining the brewery’s Side Project Series is  Terrrapin Himalayan Pink Sea Salt Lime Gose, another warm weather/tropically inspired beer.

The name pretty much gives away the composition of this gose; nuanced with limes, pink sea salt, and coriander.

The Gose is made with mineral-rich Himalayan Pink Sea Salt and has flavors of fresh squeezed Makrut Limes and subtle hints of Coriander. Quench your thirst as you meditate on our latest brew.

Side Project #29 is hitting shelves now – Chubby Bunny, a decadent s’mores inspired imperial milk stout. Also preceding this release will be Side Project #30, Blueberry Thyme Saison.

Look for Terrapin Himalayan Pink Sea Salt Lime Gose in 22 ounce bottles and draft this summer.

Style: Gose (w/ LimesCoriander. Sea Salt.)
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft.

Burial Beer & Hoof Hearted Brewing create ‘Two Dollars’ Pale Ale

Burial Two Dollars Pale Ale

Asheville, North Carolina’s Burial Beer and Marengo, Ohio’s Hoof Hearted Brewing have teamed up on a new pale ale.

This beer starts with the love of 80’s movies. If you don’t believe it, check out the Sloth and Burt Reynolds mural on the side of the Burial’s taproom. This beer starts with the love of the John Cusack classic, Better Off Dead. “Johnny” the menacing paperboy in the movie is constantly yelling “I want my two dollars” for the papers.

In that same vein, the brewing duo have created a beer for the taproom that is just $2 dollars.

‘Two Dollars’ Pale Ale is brewed with coriander and lime, plus a touch of lupulin powder (basically concentrated hops) and a bold yeast. The beer is big on flavor, not on price.

Truly a sight to behold: a man beaten. The once great champ, now, a study in moppishness. Hard enough on his luck to run form a blood-thirsty barrel of killer paperboys. But smart enough to save $2 for this can of delightful pale ale, thriftily hashed together with lupulin powder, citrus peel, and tale from our childhood that is just a beloved by these Ohio boys.

Burial Beer Two Dollars Pale Ale will be available in 12 ounce cans and draft at the brewery on Thursday, April 20th.

Style: Pale Ale (w/ Coriander. LimeLupulin Powder.)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft
Debut: 4/20/17

New name: New Belgium Juicy Watermelon Lime Ale returns

New Belgium Juicy Watermelon

New Belgium‘s watermelon lime ale  is back in the brewery’s seasonal lineup for a second time. This year, you’ll see it called New Belgium Juicy Watermelon.

The base recipe is basically the same as before. New Belgium tells Beer Street Journal that “Heavy Melon” didn’t really capture the essence of the beer. When deciding on whether or order or purchase, “heavy” anything might be a turn off. Juicy on the other hand, is much more palatable.

Watermelon and lime are the stars of this beer, that finishes at 5% alcohol by volume. New Belgium loves their seasonals, and this one might be the most crazy (non Lips of Faith) offering to date. If beer was fruit at a hot summer picnic, this beer would be it.

Cool off with this refreshingly fruity summer beer brewed with watermelons and limes.

New Belgium Juicy Watermelon is a 12 ounce bottle and draft seasonal release.

Style:              (w/ Watermelon, Lime)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, 12oz Cans, Draft
Latest Return: Early Spring, 2017
