Half Acre Announces A Meat Wave In May

Half Acre Brewing
(Chicago, IL) is releasing some new beers in the coming weeks.  The first of what is sure to be some interesting brews celebrates Chicago Craft Beer Week 2011.  The week runs from May 19th-29th this year. The beer?  Meat Wave.  Half Acre talks suds:

We’re going to release a number of beers in the coming weeks, but for one we aimed at capturing the essence of what Chicago is and how it’s people do what they do. Clearly our city hosts all kinds of interests, but we combed the fabric of this town and came back with: Pigs. Chicago has been romancing pigs and their tasty bodies in ways like never before. Pigs are hot, totally trending, and part of what we do. Chicago popular culture is running rampant with our succulent friends, while our history is steeped in pork parts. What we’re saying, is that Chicago has been entrenched in the pig for ages and we’re about to climax. Meat Wave is an english-bent India Pale Ale that will be our Chicago Craft Beer Week beer. Earthy delicious, this meat centric offering is for you, Chicago.

Style: English IPA
Availability: 22 oz bombers, Draft. Chicago area only.
Arrival: Late May, 2011

T-shirts commemorating Meat Wave available too…

History:
In 1853 Koutami Kawamoto, who was a scientist, brewed the first Japanese beer.  In 1862 the Japanese magazine ‘Taiyo’ (which means Sun) published an article about the beer brewing process. “… sugar is changed to alcohol… when it seems to be enough, beer should be matured in cedar Taru…” – (translated by Miho Sugiyama) Hitachino Japanese Classic Ale is brewed according to this original Japanese brewing process.

Style: English IPA

Stone 14th Anniversary Arrives!

Stone Brewing’s 14th Anniversary Ale has hit the shelves! Early than expected I might add.  “Emperial IPA” is on the shelves, and is an English IPA.  Here is some back story –

Mitch and Steve took a trip to England back in February to research a book they are co-authoring on IPA’s.  (Hopefully by now you know they got their start in England.)  The trip gave the duo the idea to produce an English influenced IPA.  This English IPA will use all British malts and hops.  14th Annversary will actually use only 1 malt — white malt aka extra pale malt.  It is floor malted in England (process of converting barley to malt.  Sprouted barley is kiln dryed through perforated wood floors.  Not a common practice in the US.)  White malt was very popular in the 1800′s in Burton, a big English IPA town.  It’s not readily available in the states, it will be shipped over in 2200 lb sacks to California.

Three English hop varieties will be used — East Kent Golding, Target, & Boadicea.  Boadicea is a relatively new strain of hop.  The water Stone uses comes from the Colorado River.  It’s way too soft to make an English IPA so Mitch and Steve will be using brewing salts to “Burtonize” or harden the water.  This helped clarify Burton’s IPA’s and help them hold up longer over long shipping routes.

Hops – East Kent Golding, Target, Boadicea.

Malts – White Malt (Extra Pale Malt)

Availability – 22oz Bottles, and draft. One time anniversary brew.

7/1 – Arrived at Hop City & Green’s

COMING SOON: Stone 14th Anniversary

Details about Stone Brewing’s (Escondido, CA) 14th Anniversary are starting to surface.  In a video blog posted to Stone’s website, Steve Wagner and Mitch Steele describe their upcoming release “Emperial IPA.”

Left Hand – 400 LB Monkey All Year

Left Hand Brewing’s 400 lb Monkey is back on the shelves, and this time it’s not going anywhere.  Starting now, this seasonal release by the brewery is going year round.  The label artwork also got a facelift.

400 lb Monkey is an English Style IPA.  Stylistically, this means this IPA is a slightly less bold in comparison to American IPA’s.  This in no way equates to flavor.  400 lb Monkey is tasty IPA with noticeable grapefruit/citrus hops, but in the case of this English style IPA — the malt is a bit more pronounced.

Monkey uses a special hop called Boadicea.  These hops boast a light floral/citrus tone, with some characteristics and bittering tendencies of a Noble hop.  Boadicea hops draw their name from the  warrior queen who resisted multiple invasions by the Romans.  Why name this hop after her?  Well, this strain of hop is especially resistant to aphids, an insect that destroys hop harvests.  The strength to resist the onslaughts of it’s attackers makes this hop so aptly named.

Availability — 12oz/6pks, Draft, and Cask offerings. Year Round

6.7% ABV

Fun Fact: The name 400 lb monkey comes from Brewing OPs VP Joe Schiraldi. Frustrated with brewing practices said the now famous quote – “Any monkey can throw 400 lbs of hops in a kettle!” – beernews.org
