Wicked Weed Brettaberry returns with hot new artwork

Wicked Weed Brettaberry is returning to shelves once again. This year it is sporting some sexy new artwork.

A ton of fruit (literally and figuratively) goes into making Wicked Weed Brettaberry. The Brettanomyces heavy beer has around one half pound per gallon of strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and honey, taking fruit to the next level.

A half pound per gallon of strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries are packed into this effervescent Brettanomyces ale. These berries combine with honey to create the bursting fruit flavor of a freshly baked berry pie. Blended with a light portion of our golden sour and aged in French oak foeders, Brettaberry then bottle conditions until ripe for the picking.

Wicked Weed Brettaberry is a 500 milliliter bottle offering, seasonally.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Blackberries, Blueberries, Strawberries, HoneyOak Aged.)
Availability: 500ml Bottles
Latest Return: August, 2016

Unknown Brewing 2.5 features bourbon & fruit

Unknown Brewing 2.5

Unknown Brewing 2.5 (ish) is the second release in the Charlotte, North Carolina based brewery’s on going Anniversary Series.

Last year, brewery founder Brad Schell realized at one point that he had completely forgotten the brewery’s first birthday. (Owning a burgeoning brewery will do that.) If you know anything about Schell and well, the whole brewery’s less than normal mentality, then you’ll fully understand his next move. Throw a 1.5 ish birthday party. And… do it again next year.

Unknown Brewing 2.5 is hitting shelves in North Carolina. South Carolina, and Georgia. The beer is a blend of both a Belgian-style red ale, and a Belgian-style golden ale, aged in bourbon barrels with apricots, blackberries, and cherries. Truly a party in a bottle. Last years is pictured on the left in the image above.

Unknown Brewing 2.5 is a limited 22 ounce bottle offering.

Style: Belgian-Style Strong Ale (w/ Blackberries, Apricots, Cherries. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft. Limited.
Debut: June/July, 2016

Foothills Dead and Berried (blackberry bourbon stout) coming late summer

Foothills Dead and Berried

Foothills Dead and Berried, an all new imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with raspberries, is slated for August.

This year, the Foothills Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate release was pushed up to spring. You have the barrels to thank for that. Because of this move, the brewery had a slot in the release schedule (August-September) that needed to be filled. 300 freshly emptied Buffalo Trace barrels recently came to the Foothill’s Winston-Salem, North Carolina home, for BA Sexual Chocolate and Barrel Aged People’s Porter. However, some barrels were left over.

That’s where Foothills Dead and Berried got started. The brewery created an all new imperial stout (different from the Sex chocolate base) last fall. That beer aged for a while on 420 pounds Oregonian blackberries. Then – bourbon barrels for over 5 months.

Up side? Another potentially fantastic barrel-aged beer from Foothills.

Downside? Foothills Dead and Berried will be draft only this time around. On draft at the brewery and brewpub, and the Denver Rare Beer Tasting this fall.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ Blackberries. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Availability: Draft Only
Debut: August, 2016

Wicked Weed Bramble Barrel joins Canvas Series

Wicked Weed Bramble Barrel

Wicked Weed Bramble Barrel has joined the Asheville, North Carolina brewery’s Canvas Series. Inspired by the the Gin Bramble cocktail.

The base beer for Wicked Weed Bramble Barrel is an American sour ale, brewed with local blackberries, and aged in Cardinal gin barrels. Those barrels give the beer a touch of spearmint. The finishing touch is lemon zest, to properly mimic the cocktail.

The bramble cocktail hails from 1880’s London, England. Dry gin and lemon juice are the stars of the cocktail, along with red fruits like blackberries and cranberries. (No cranberries in this beer.)

Wicked Weed Bramble Barrel is available in the usual 500 milliliter bottles. Distribution started this week.

Style: American Wild Ale/Sour (w/ Barrel Aged. Blackberries, Lemons.)
Availability: 500ml Bottles
Release: Mid-February, 2016

Spotlight: Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness

Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness bottle

Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness is coming in December, the culmination of a year-long Angels Series.

2015 has seen the releases of Red Angel, Golden Angel, and White Angel. The final angel – Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness, has spent more time in the barrel than any Angel in the series, and that’s because of the Oloroso Sherry barrels. (Plus the metric ton of boysenberries, raspberries, blackberries, and cherries that have been quietly adding flavor.) All total, that’s 3 tons of fruit, and 16 months of maturation.

Much like sour beer, Oloroso sherry (fortified wine), relies on oxidative aging and a protective pellicle to develop full, rustic flavors in these oak vessels.

Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness is a 500 ml bottle offering, that sold out in seconds.

We made a few trips to the brewery this year, staring at those Oloroso sherry barrels. What came out of it is as crazy as it sounds. As the beer warms up the taste is a fun game of which fruit is in my mouth. Plus sherry. Wicked Weed excels at making the wild/sour ales tart, while keeping the fruit fresh. Fantastic conclusion to a year of “Angels” from Wicked Weed.

The brewery re-brewed this beer at the end of 2015, set to return in 2016.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Boysenberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Cherries.)

Release: 12/12/15 (Pre-sale 11/21)
