Dogfish Head Mixed Media debuts as April draws to a close – a beer with a wine inspiration.
A beer and wine hybrid is nothing new for the Delaware based brewery. In 2013, Dogfish Head debuted Sixty-One, an IPA brewed with Syrah grape must. Other hybrids in the brewery’s arsenal include Raison D’Etre, and Midas Touch.
The marriage of hops and grapes is reimagined again this month in Dogfish Head Mixed Media. In this creation, 51% of the fermentables in this beer come from beer grain, and 49% from Viognier grape must from Alexandria Nicole Cellars The brewery laments, Mixed Media is as close to wine a beer can legally be. (Those wanting to argue that definition will have to take that up with the federal government.) A “distinctive” Belgian yeast is the final flourish.
…Mixed Media is a complex vino-esque ale with a spicy white wine body, and notes of sweet melon and white grape. …Mixed Media is pale straw in color with a tart, dry finish. Late-harvest Viognier grape must from friends at Alexandria Nicole Cellars in Washington were used in the brewing process to round out the flavors.
Dogfish Head Mixed Media is available in 12-ounce bottles and draft as a limited release.
