Bell’s To Use 100 Year Old Fermenters In New Project

Bell’s cut the ribbon on their new brewhouse last week, giving the brewery much needed room to grow.  The news doesn’t stop there.  An interesting new project is surfacing, combining some 100 year old history and new brewing techniques for Bell’s.

John Mallett (Production Manager at Bell’s) met with John Stroh (who’s family started Stroh Brewing) and it was mentioned that there were 100 year old wooden fermenters in an old warehouse in Detroit, Michigan.  So now sits in the cellar of the new facility (in pieces apparently) 4 of these century old fermenters.

The plan is to reassemble … Read the rest

A Little Beer & A Litte Satan With Surly Pentagram

Surly Brewing’s future satanic offering – Pentagram.  A wild ale aged in red wine barrels.  This evil beer looks like it would fly around the room if it could.  Surly mentioned this release back at GABF in October. It might become an annual release. It was apparently known as Surly Five from a year ago.

This Arcane Seal guards an enigmatic brew that is FUNKY, DARK, and SOUR.  If you choose t0 break the seal, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!  100% Brettanomyces Dark beer fermented stainless and aged in used red wine barrels. “Brett” is a unique yeast strain that produces flavors that would be considered offensiveRead the rest

This Demon Is Surly SŸX

There’s a hell of a lot going on with Surly Brewing these days.  Law changes, brewery expansions, baseball parks and more.  Not bad for six years.  This is Surly SŸX, a strong ale that is the result of aging it on a “honeycomb” of different woods.

Woah. Who would have thought? Another great year flew by. bringing us to the big SIX. What better way to celebrate than to challenge ourselves with unfamiliar brewing techniques and materials? Utilizing six wood species in a “Honey Comb*” shape for aging this year’s anniversary beer. SYX comes in at Alc. 15% by Vol. and is one to be savored with its pale gold color, dry toffee and fruit character and warming afterglow Read the rest

New Belgium’s Red Hoptober Coming This Fall

This should pretty much confirm the rumor, New Belgium will replace Hoptober with Red Hoptober this fall.  It’s not too surprising.  The brewery changes up its seasonals every couple of years.

A pleasing ale for the harvest season, Red Hoptober is pitched with Centennial, Cascade, and Eldorado Red hops.  It’s the perfect sipper for these last, fevered days of summer and the cooling, coming autumn nights. Bold and delicious, Red Hoptober has just enough bitter to delight.  Crack one open, sit back and enjoy the season’s change.  Read the rest

Weasel Rodeo is the Next Jester King/Mikkeller Collab

Weasel Rodeois the 2nd collaboration between Jester King and Mikkeller. (First was Ale/Malt Liquor In TX’ Geek Brunch.)  This new weasel is based of Mikkeller’s Beer Geek Brunch Weasel, a beer brewed with “weasel coffee,” the most expensive coffee in the world.  You might have heard it called “poop coffee” because the kopi luwak “weasel” eats the berries of the plant, and excretes the coffee beans.   Vietnamese roaster, Trung Nguyen, provided the Kopi Luwak coffee.  Weasel Rodeo is brewed with smoked malt and ground chipotle pepper.

Why, upon seeing a testosterone-fueled Read the rest
