Sierra Nevada & Karl Strauss “NXS” Red IPA debuts, California only

Sierra Nevada Karl Strauss NXS 2017

Late in 2015 the brewing world saw Sierra Nevada and Stone Brewing team up in a hoppy collaboration known as NXS.  The all California creation was split down the middle, with 50% of the IPA batch aged in gin barrels, and 50% in rye whiskey barrels. NXS rises once again this week, this time, with another California based brewery, Karl Strauss.

RELATED: Beer Collaborations

One thing is certain, hops definitely unite brewers. Which ones chosen, and how you brew with them is just one of the things setting you apart. Sierra Nevada and Karl Strauss collective have 65 years of craft brewing under their belt. It is the experience that will bring you what the duo calls “unabashedly hoppy”, an IPA with tropical fruit and citrus hop flavors. Sierra Nevada touts this beer as a “red IPA” and by the looks of it, the moniker fits.

Craft beer was born in California and it was here that brewers created the “west coast” style of hop forward brewing. California is a big state, and NorCal and SoCal often have different approaches to beer – yet remain united through hops.

Sierra Nevada Karl Strauss NXS will be available in 22 ounce bottles, limited to California.

Style: IPA
Availability: 22oz Bottles
Debut: Mid-March, 2017

Karl Strass Brewed 20% More O-Fest This Year

Karl Strauss seasonal, Oktoberfest has returned. The demand for the beer has forced the brewery to create over 25 batches for 2013. That’s a 20% increase.

Perle hops imported directly from the Hallertau region of Germany give the beer a smooth balanced finish. This celebratory lager puts the ‘fest’ in the month of October.

Available in bottles and draft across California while supplies last.

Karl Strauss 24th: Flan-Diddly-Anders

Karl Strauss will celebrate 24 years of brewing with their version of a Flanders-Style Ale. Aptly named 24th Anniversary Flanders-Style Ale, this has been aging in oak barrels since last year’s anniversary party and is part of Karl Strauss’s ever-expanding barrel program. If you get the chance to try this beer, Karl Strauss invites you to tweet them your sour face @Karl_Struass with the hashtag #sourface.

“We’ve been experimenting with sour beers for a while and we thought it would be fun to barrel age a bigger version of our Flan-diddly-anders. The Flanders style is tart enough to make sour fans happy but still accessible enough for people who might not have tried a sour beer before.  It was a fun beer to make.”

The 24th Anniversary will be available at their brewery for their 24th Anniversary Changing of the Barrels Party on February 2nd to the 100 few with tickets. During this intimate event, guests will also be able to taste a sample of next year’s doppelbock before it hibernates in barrels until next year.

Style: Flander’s Red

Two Tortugas Sneak Preview Tomorrow

Karl Strauss Brewing’s GABF medal winning ale is on the way.  Two Tortungas Holiday Ale is the 2nd installment of their 12 Days of Christmas series.  This quad showcases dark fruit flavors and Belgian yeast spicy flavor.

“We wanted to brew a big, complex Belgian beer that will continue to develop and change over time,” said Karl Strauss Head Brewer, Matt Johnson. “Right now the beer is very malty with a definite warming character. Over time, the spiciness will become more prevalent and the caramel malt flavors will evolve into dark fruit flavors like raisins and plums.”

Two Tortugas Quad makes an LA Beer Week sneak preview today, hitting the public in November, 2011.

Label:
San Diego may not top the list for birdwatchers but it certainly tops the list for beer-drinkers. And while you’re more likely to spot a Sea Turtle than a Turtle Dove, tracking down a world class beer is easy. Two Tortugas is the 2nd addition to our less than literal “Twelve Days” series of holiday ales. This Belgian-inspired Quadruple Ale has a delicate union of toffee, dark fruits, and warming spices that will continue to develop with age. Raise a glass to 2011 or save a bottle for 2021, this turtle’s got legs.

Style: Quadrupel
Hops: Bravo, Willamette
Malts: Pale, White Wheat, CaraBelge, CaraMunich II
Yeast: Belgian Abbey
Adjuncts: Dark Belgian Candi Sugar

Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft. 1 time series release.
