Heavy Seas & Devils Backbone Create Land Ho!

Heavy Seas is on the cusp of releasing a new collaboration brewed with Devils Backbone (Roseland, Virginia).  The beer is quite befitting a pirate – a “black pilsner.”  Jason Oliver, brewmaster of Devils Backbone grew up and brewed in the Baltimore/DC Area and known Heavy Sea’s Hugh Sisson for long time.   Hugh approached Jason to work on a new collab and of course he took the opportunity.

Heavy Seas Maroons A Few Offerings

Heavy Seas Brewing is experiencing what a lot of brewers are experiencing lately – growing pains.  As Heavy Seas expands and adjusts to demand, a few things have get cut.  These releases will be “marooned” from the 2012 lineup.  AARSH Red (Imperial Red Ale)Big DIPA (Imperial IPA)Hang Ten (Doppleweizen)Holy Sheet! Initial Details: Heavy Seas Plank II

Had a little chat with the southeast’s most popular beer bachelor from Heavy Seas Brewing, Kevin Fox.    Looks like the Baltimore based brewery has finalized details about their second Plank release.   Just a recap – this series was announced in early 2011.  Plank is a  brand new experiment by Heavy Seas showcasing unique wood aging treatments to add nuance and flavor to the beer.  Each beer is allowed time to age on the wood during secondary fermentation.   Plank I was an old ale aged yellow poplar – the first aged on that kind of wood.

Beer people are resilient.  Instead of just being sad about a senseless tragedy, Heavy Seas & Terrapin Brewing are bringing something good from it.  Free Spirit celebrates the life of Brittney Fox Watts who past away in July, 2011.   This farmhouse ale captures the “free spirit” of an individual who touched quite a few lives. Heavy Seas & Terrapin Plan Memorial Brew

The Terrapin & Heavy Seas family recently lost a loved one in a senseless tragedy.  Brittany Fox Watts was a lover of craft beer, & wife of Brian Watt of  Terrapin Brewing Company and sister to southeastern Heavy Seas rep Kevin Fox.  In true beer tribute fashion, a memorial collaboration beer is being planned by the two breweries, and labeled in her honor.
