DuClaw releases donut inspired “Unicorn Farts” glitter beer this weekend

DuClaw Sour Me Unicorn Farts

When Beer Street Journal started 11 years ago, big, bitter imperial India pale ales and adjunct-free barrel-aged imperial stouts were all the rage. It’s 2019 we are a long way from there. A LONG way.

Growing up my sister had a Trapper Keeper with sparkly unicorns on it. She loved it so much she would hide it under her bed at night until she went to school the next day. Today, I’m reminded of that beloved binder, not because I’m reminiscing. Nope. It’s because I’m writing about a freaking beer. Two things I never thought would go together. Take second and meet Duclaw Sour Me Unicorn Farts.

The inspiration for this release comes from nearby, self-described  “Local as fu#k” Diablo Doughnuts, who makes a pastry called the “Unicorn Fart”. It’s a white frosted donut topped with Fruity Pebbles cereal, plus more frosting. Why the fu#k not?

So how do you make a beer inspired by this colorful plate of high blood sugar? Fruit and glitter. Handfuls and handfuls of edible glitter.

Somewhere the ridiculously creative American brewing landscape, a craft brewer found a way to combine beer and glitter. The result looks something like those squishy balls that kids get out grocery store vending machines. You don’t have to understand it. You just have to know it happened. When making a beer called “Unicorn Farts” it better damn well have glitter in it. Period.

I’m making a pretty safe assumption here. The donut that inspires this pretty freaking sweet and sugary. Knowing this, DuClaw Brewing made this beer sour to offset the circular blast of sugar. In the end, Sour Me Unicorn Farts is a tart beer, with glitter and Fruity Pebble-like fruit additions. The first beer fart we’ve ever actually wanted is here.

The first cans of DuClaw Sour Me Unicorn Farts will be available on Saturday, March 16th at the brewery in Baltimore. A portion of proceeds from the launch event for this beer will benefit The Pride Center of Maryland.

Expect distribution of this Trapper Keeper beer to start in April.

Style: Sour Ale (w/ Fruit. Edible Glitter.)
Availability: 16oz Cans
Debut: 3/16/19

An espresso bean infused chocolate peanut butter porter: DuClaw Sweet Baby Java

DuClaw Sweet Baby Java

Coffee meets chocolate meets peanut butter. DuClaw Sweet Baby Java is ready for the big time.

To date, the Maryland based brewery already has two peanut butter beers in their arsenal. The first – Sweet Baby Jesus!a, a chocolate peanut butter porter. Sweet BJ’s success opened the door for an even stronger brew peanut butter concoction,  For Pete’s Sake. Both are a dream for peanut butter lovers. This spring, look for DuClaw Sweet Baby Java.

A few years ago, brewery founder Dave Benfield was at a beer event where Sweet Baby Jesus! was run through a Randall (think of it like a French Press of sorts) filled with coffee beans. The discovery he saids – was awesome.

The roasty flavor of coffee, peanut butter, and chocolate blended perfectly. We quickly kicked a half barrel. Since then we’ve regularly paired coffee with Sweet Baby at DuClaw events.”

Since that day, the brewery has been experimenting with various methods of infusing coffee in order to bring this beer into full production. A few dozen batches later, DuClaw Sweet Baby Java was ready for the big time.

Look for Sweet Baby in 12 ounce bottles and draft through spring, 2017.

Style: Porter (w/ Coffee. Peanut Butter, Chocolate.)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. Spring Seasonal.

IPA/Farmhouse hybrid: DuClaw Farmhouse Gypsy

DuClaw Farmhouse Gypsy

DuClaw Farmhouse Gypsy, a riff on the brewery’s flagship India pale ale, Neon Gypsy, debuts in February.

Using Neon Gypsy’s hop and grain bill, the Maryland based brewery introduced a saison yeast during the fermentation process. The result is a farmhouse  ale / IPA hybrid.

This medium-bodied hybrid of IPA and Saison is pale amber with a crisp mouthfeel and moderately strong 7.3% ABV. Grapefruit, citrus, and pine combine with the dusty, peppery character of Saison yeast for a flavor profile that is truly the best of both brews.

DuClaw Farmhouse Gypsy is available on draft starting February 1st, 2017. 12 ounce bottles will follow the coming weeks.

Style: Saison/Farmhouse Ale
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft.
Debut: 2/1/17

7.3% ABV

DuClaw For Pete's Sake

Peanut butter lover? Put this on your drink list. DuClaw For Pete’s Sake is back in action as of today.

Why stop there, when you can make the beer stronger. That’s where DuClaw For Pete’s Sake came to be – an imperial chocolate peanut butter porter. Everything about this beer is rich. A mouthful of chocolate and peanut butter, with a warming 9% ABV finish.

…silky, full body, big roasted malt flavor, and aroma dominated by rich notes of peanut butter and chocolate…

Hop Bomb: DuClaw Hopalujah for 20 years

DuClaw Hopalujah

DuClaw Hopalujah Double IPA debuts this weekend, celebrating the brewery’s 20th Anniversary.

The new addition features Centennial, Galaxy, and Simcoe hops. All in all, 4.5 pounds of hops were used per barrel. Hopalujah kicks off a new “Off the Line” Series for the brewery.

In truth, the amount and variety of hops required (4.5 pounds per barrel!) restricts us from making this special double IPA again anytime soon, as it throws off our hop reserves for other brews.

DuClaw Hopalujah Double IPA will be available in 22 ounce bottles and draft in limited quantities at the brewery’s celebration on August 20th.

Style: Imperial IPA
Hops: Centennial, Galaxy, Simcoe
Debut: 8/20/16

8.4% ABV
