Smuttynose Scotch Ale 2013 Has Some Wine Aging
More Smuttynose news this week. The brewery’s Big Scotch Ale is less than a month away. The 2013 release will feature a little variation, a blend of red wine barrel aged Scotch Ale.
The red wine blend should add an interesting complexity to an already bold beer. The brewery describes the base beer flavor as: …caramel and subtle roasted malt flavors, Scotch ales can feature smoky flavors (derived from a small measure of peated malt) or, more traditionally, no smoky flavor.
Look for this in 22oz bombers in mid-October.

Smuttynose Big A IPA: Sept 16
Smuttynose Brewing’s Big A IPA will return on September 16th, 2013. The imperial IPA will find its way to draft handles in Smuttynose distro areas, alongside 12oz/4 packs.

Smutty’s Next Short Batch Drops Sept 20th
Look out Smutty fans for a new addition to the Short Batch Series, Straw-Barb Short Weisse. The brewery took a berliner weisse and added strawberries and rhubarb. Starting to sound a bit like pie? The B-weisse is good at taking on fruity and herbal flavors. The Short Batch Series features creative, one-off offerings.
Smuttynose will release bottles of Straw-Barb on September 20th. Leftovers will shop on September 23rd. Retail $12

Stone & Smuttynose Create Small Batch “Last Stand”
Stone Brewing Co (Escondido, CA) and Smuttynose Brewing Company (Portsmouth, NH) have teamed up to create just 30 barrels (930 gallons) of Custer’s Last Stand. Stone’s founder Greg Koch joined Smutty in the brew process in New Hampshire, where they made – don’t be surprised – an IPA. Not just any IPA though, a “right-after-Prohibition Ballantine IPA” as mentioned in Stone’s Mitch Steele’s book on IPAs.
Tappings of this beer continue in August. If you’re around New England, look out for tappings – found here. Bottles will go on sale on July 19th at Smuttynose. $9

More Pumpkins In July: Smuttynose
So, Southern Tier’s popular [Fall] offering Pumking has hit shelves already here in July, 2013. That pumpkin beer won’t be lonely long. Reports of Smuttynose Pumpkin are popping up too. The brewery’s release calendar is quite clear on the fact it is a July – October seasonal.

Smuttynose Hits Indiana
Smuttynose Brewing (Portsmouth, NH) will be shipping to Indiana by the end of this month. The Hoosier State is the 22nd state the brewery ships to. Smutty has signed with Cavalier Distributing, who will brewing in the brewery’s entire lineup, one-offs, and seasonals.
Smuttynose is in the middle of a $20 million dollar expansion in their home state.
Smuttynose Short Batch Luna Moth Hoppy Saison
Smuttynose Brewing will be releasing a new beer in their Short Batch Series. Luna Moth is a hoppy saison featuring El Dorado hops for added fruit characteristics. Only 950 bottles are available with limited distribution beginning June 10, 2013.
