Saint Arnold Icon Red Sorachi Ace Released

Saint Arnold Icon Red Sorachi Ace Dubbel

Saint Arnold Brewing Co (Houston, TX) releases Icon Red in the market this week.

As the name suggests, Saint Arnold Icon Red Sorachi Ace is a Belgian-style dubbel, that highlights this historical hop.

“We wanted to use the classic Dubbel style as a baseline and throw in something interesting and unique to make it more relevant for Texas craft beer fans seeking new and innovative beer,” said Brewer Eddie Gutierrez, who cut his teeth as a home brewer before jumping from a career as a mechanical engineer in the oil patch to brewing professionally. “We did a blind taste test comparing the test batch side-by-side against many of the classic Belgian Dubbels that craft beer drinkers love and our batch did really well, so I think people who appreciate the style will really enjoy this fresh take on it.”

Sorachi Ace was developed over 30 years ago for Sapporo [Brewery] in Japan. Saint Arnold Icon Red Sorachi Ace will be available in 12oz bottles and draft for a limited time.

Style: Belgian-style Dubbel
Hops: Sorachi Ace

Saint Arnold Bishop’s Barrel #7 Hits

Saint Arnold Brewing Co. (Houston, TX) Bishop’s Barrel No. 7 arrives today. This 7th release in the series is an imperial stout that spent 11 months in bourbon barrels.

It was more than a year ago that Bishop Barrel 7 was brewed. In June of 2013, Saint Arnold transferred it to Woodford Reserve barrels where waited patiently.

But first there is Bishop’s Barrel No. 7, a bourbon barrel Imperial Stout that pours a deep black with rich notes of bourbon and chocolate.  The grain bill for Bishop’s Barrel No. 7 is slightly different than for Bishop’s Barrel No. 1 and Bishop’s Barrel No. 3 (also both bourbon barrel Imperial Stouts) resulting in a slightly sweeter, rounder character to the beer.

Saint Arnold Bishop Barrel 7 is very limited, and only available in Texas and Louisiana.

Style: Imperial Stout (Barrel Aged. Bourbon)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. TX & LA

11% ABV, 49 IBUs

Saint Arnold’s New Icon: Texas Common

About every three months, Saint Arnold Brewing Company (Houston, TX) releases a new offering the “Icon” series. For this release, the brewery chose to honor Anchor Brewing’s Steam, and California common style beers with a “Texas Common.”

Saint Arnold Texas Common is a slightly hoppier take on the style, fermented with “San Francisco Lager” yeast.

Our Texas Common is a red amber beer that holds a nice creamy head with an aroma full of tropical fruit. The flavor starts with a pleasant combination of fruit and malt and then goes to a long, dry bitter with just a hint of malt hanging on all the way.

Saint Arnold Icon Texas Common is available in 12oz bottles, and draft for a limited time.

Style: California Common
Hops: Mosaic

Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft

6.7% ABV, 52 IBUs

Beer for Heroes: Saint Arnold Homefront IPA Releases

Saint Arnold Brewing Company releases Homefront IPA today. The beer is brewed as a part of Operation Homefront, an organization that provides emergency financial aid and other assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors.

The single batch release is just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. The IPA is brewed with orange zest.

“This is a community effort, with volunteers showing up to help zest oranges for the recipe and the entire supply chain enthusiastically stepping forward to donate their products and services,” said Brock Wagner, founder/brewer of Saint Arnold Brewing Company. “With our war efforts no longer in the headlines everyday, people quickly lose focus on the sacrifices made by those who have served our country. We hope Homefront IPA brings back some awareness to these issues in addition to the money we will be donating from sales of this beer.”

In 2012, the Saint Arnold and partners raised $125,000 for the cause.

Style: IPA (w/ Orange Zest)
Availability: 22oz Bottles. Texas Market

Saint Arnold Launches New Year Round Offering

Saint Arnold (Houston, TX) has launched a new year round offering this week. Pucker up for Boiler Room Berliner Weisse.

Boiler Room started out of an accident. The brewery had started in on their summer seasonal Lawnmower, to find that half the malt had ended up on the floor instead of in the mill. That resulted in 136 barrels (4,216 gallons) of half strength wort (the sugary beer precursor.) That left the brewery with a decision to make.

Brewer Steven Rawlings poured off 10 gallons of the wort, pitched some funky yeast, and let it sour in the boiler room heat for a few days. Next step was to boil the beer, add hops, and ferment it. Saint Arnold Boiler Room Berliner Weisse was born.

“This is the most complicated beer we have ever made, yet it is very light and delicate,” said Saint Arnold Founder/Brewer Brock Wagner. “The result is an incredibly refreshing beer with the light sweetness of the malt balanced with the tartness from the sour wort. While intended to be enjoyed as is, I can also imagine it mixed with syrups or in a beer cocktail.”

This kind of beer is challenging for brewers. The bacteria that is needed to make Boiler Room Berliner Weisse isn’t bacteria you want accidentally getting into other beers. If you make a misstep, your other beers could “get sick,” to put it lightly. This new tart offering is the first new year rounder since Endeavor launched in February, 2012.

Style: Berliner Weisee
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft. Year round
Arrival: March 19, 2014
