Flying Dog Dark & Stormy Ale is the first the new “Sub Rosa” series

Flying Dog Dark & Stormy Ale

Flying Dog Dark & Stormy Ale has been selected as the first experimental release in what the Maryland brewer calls the “Sub Rosa” Series.

In Latin, Sub Rosa means “secret” or “secretly” which makes the small-batch, one-off series aptly named. Cocktail fiends have already probably guessed, Flying Dog Dark & Stormy Ale is based on the drink by the same name.

A traditional Dark and Stormy cocktail features ginger beer, bitters, and dark rum. This beer-cocktail hybrid was created by Kyle Bolte of Flying Dog, and features a touch of ginger spice to offset the vanilla, cinnamon and molasses added to the base beer. Bolte spent what had to be some pretty boring hours of his day tasting rums and ginger beers to find the exact flavors he wanted.

Pairs well with a semi-deserted island with Scarlett Johansson. – Flying Dog

Flying Dog Dark & Stormy Ale will be available in 16 ounce cans at the brewery only, on March 11th. Each release will be limited to 50 cases, thanks to the limitations the pilot system. A “Lactose IPA” is slated for April.

Style:           (w/ Ginger, Molasses, Vanilla Beans, Cinnamon.)
Availability: 16oz Cans. Limited Run
Debut: 3/11/17

7.4% ABV

Beer & Civil War history meet in Flying Dog Dragon Lady

Flying Dog Dragon Lady

Flying Dog Dragon Lady American Saison debuts this month. A follow-up to another recent “historical” collaboration.

Last year, the Frederick, Maryland based brewery debuted Saw Bones, a beer inspired by the American Civil War.  The National Museum of Civil War Medicine is located in Flying Dog’s hometown – with an amazing story to tell.

Frederick, Maryland is right on the Mason-Dixon Line. During the very bloody war (over 600,000 died) both the Union and the Confederacy marched through the town during the Maryland campaigns. Ultimately, the town became home to several hospitals. The first release, Saw Bones, was an homage to the horrific amputations that frequently occurred during the war.

In this sequel, Flying Dog Dragon Lady honors the work of Dorothea “Dragon Lady” Dix. During the war, she served as the Superintendent of Nurses in the Union army. She was described as being fierce, compassionate, and stubborn; while working tireless to improve the welfare of the patients around her. After the war broke out in 1861, Dix convinced the army to create the first female nursing corps. She was very strict (it IS wartime), earning her the “dragon lady” moniker.

As for Flying Dog Dragon Lady, the base beer is a saison, brewed with wintergreen. The scrub has been used in medicine thanks to its “antirheumatic, antispasmodic, antiseptic and carminative properties”, as well as its ability to kill pain.

Flying Dog Dragon Lady will be available in 12 ounce bottles at both the brewery, and select northern Virginia locations.

Style: Saison (w/ Wintergreen)
Availability: 12oz Bottles. Limited.
Debut: January, 2017

5.4% ABV

HOT. Flying Dog Carolina Reaper Peach IPA

Flying Dog Carolina Reaper Peach IPA

Flying Dog Carolina Reaper Peach IPA is now a part of the brewery’s “Heat Series.” This hot one is notable. Especially if you love hot food.

It’s all about the Carolia Reaper pepper. You should know it by now as the world’s hottest pepper. It’s ridiculously hotter than Jalapeño. It’s hotter than Ghost Peppers. The brainchild of Puckerbutt Pepper Company’s Ed Currie.

So this isn’t just all heat (and later intestinal discomfort), the brewery added peaches.

This beer’s sweet peach and juicy hops hit you first and then the Reaper chews you up and spits you out. One to fear, for sure.

The brewery said it best when they said Flying Dog Carolina Reaper Peach IPA goes hard in the paint. That’s a hot, menacing pepper. You won’t soon forget it.

Style: IPA (w/ Carolina Reaper Peppers, Peaches)
Availability: 12oz Bottles
Debut: Mid-August, 2016

6.8% ABV

Flying Dog Brewhouse Rarities White Peach Saison debuts

Flying Dog Brewhouse Rarities White Peach Saison

Flying Dog Brewhouse Rarities White Peach Saison has debuted, a late summer saison with peaches.

Erin and Nate from the brewery’s marketing team, mentioned the idea for this release. As a late summer release, a French-style saison would be nicely nuanced by white peaches. In case you don’t know, white or pale peach is lower in acidity, than a yellow peach, and taste sweeter.

The candy-sweet character of El Dorado hops added a modern twist to the beer, which is already high on our crushability scale.

Flying Dog Brewhouse Rarities White Peach Saison is a 12 ounce bottle and draft limited offering.

Style: Saison (w/ Peaches, Black Peppercorn)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. Limited release.
Debut: 8/12/16

5.7% ABV
