Deschutes & Bendistillery create Black Butte Whiskey

Black Butte Whiskey

Deschutes Brewery and Bendistillery are ready to debut a new beer inspired spirit – Black Butte Whiskey.

Black Butte Whiskey took the last three years to develop. The spirit is double distilled from the wash of Deschutes year-round Black Butte Porter, and aged in a #4 char American oak barrel.

While Black Butte Whiskey is a result of three years work, the idea dates back 20 years. Jim Bendis, founder of Bendistillery, barreled a small batch of Deschutes’ Black Butte Porter on a whim. The barrel was forgotten about for years until the distillery moved and the barrel was rediscovered.

The whiskey was more about an opportunity to innovate at a new level by elevating the beer and creating a very different product altogether. This is what can happen when you’re having fun and not bound by convention!” – Gary Fish, CEO & Deschutes Founder

Thanks to the chocolate malt content of the beer, Black Butte Whiskey’s flavor is pretty unique.

Starting September 21st, the whiskey is available at Deschutes in Bend and Portland. Bottles can be purchased at the distillery and Oregon liquor stores.

A larger release is planned in late 2017.
